Johan Maelwael
Johan Maelwael (c. 1370-1415) is the first known Dutch painter. More than six hundred years ago, he was one of the most successful artists in Western Europe. Maelwael grew up in Nijmegen, the oldest town in the Netherlands, situated in the Duchy of Gelre. Around 1400, he celebrated his heyday in Duon. An important artistic centre in Europe.
